Dear Sprout 1 Families,
Well, Spring is in the air, and so are all the bugs. We all had fun watching the little bugs try to crawl up the slide. Some made it, some did not.
In April, we explored Containers. It was nice that the bugs came out so we could examine them this month. Everyone enjoyed filling up the containers in the room with many different toys.
At circle time, we read about bugs that were hungry and lonely. We also read about Spring and all the new animals that are born. The Sprouts enjoyed these books this month:
- Duck’s Springtime by Alice Schertle
- The Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carl
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
- Miss Spider’s Tea Party by David Kirk.
We finally had a study to accompany our favorite songs, the Itsy Bitsy Spider and Bumble Bee. Both songs brought the Sprouts to their feet for much crazy and loud singing and dancing!
Art time has become one of their favorite times of the day. They are getting good at coloring on the paper and squeezing the glue bottle to get the glue to come out. They are all great at doing the different projects. In the classroom, we had bug containers where Sprouts could place plastic bugs and small LEGO containers that they could open and close.
Outside, we searched for bugs everywhere on our playground. We didn’t catch many, as they were good at hiding, and it was a little bit early for bugs. It was a great month anyway.
Sprout Highlights:
Wynter enjoyed standing up and dancing as we sang the Bumble Bee song at circle time. She would smile and say, “Bee gone.”
Cadence liked to put the big plastic bugs in the bug containers. She would lift the container and say, “Look. Look. Bug.”
As we sang the Itsy Bitsy Spider song at circle time, Violet would hop up, run to the book area, and grab the Itsy Bitsy Spider book. When she sat back down, she would show everyone the book.
Blake liked opening and closing the colored LEGO containers. She would hold them and say, “I did it.”
Jordan had fun coloring and painting the various bug projects during art time. He would finish, smile, and say, “Do it.”
Grady would fill the bug containers with toys and then walk around the room carrying them. As he was carrying them, he would say, “Yeah. Yeah.”
Jaxon would sit on the floor and pile up the bugs before him. As he played with them, he would say, “Go bee.”
Declan liked to take the snakes and shake them as he walked. He would have the biggest smile on his face as he did so.
We had lots of fun exploring all the containers and bugs this month. We look forward to learning what new things we’ll know next month.
In May, we will be exploring Lights and Shadows. We don’t know if you have noticed, but the Sprouts have been interested in their shadows. They also point to the sun and tell us, “Bright. Bright.” As we study lights and shadows, the Sprouts will develop their language and literacy skills by naming and describing different types of light and discussing their shadows on the ground.
In our Classroom:
- Flashlights will accompany the songs that we sing
- We will read books about the Sun and the Moon
- We will introduce a light table
- Art activities that involve light.
- The books we read will discuss various lights and how objects can create shadows.
Outside:
- We will get to know our shadows and even try to catch them.
- Use magnifying glasses to create different lights and shadows
Once again, thank you all for coming to the conferences. It was great to sit down and talk about things. If you have any more questions about what we discussed or the observations, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Reminders:
- Please ensure your Sprout is wearing weather-appropriate clothing that can be layered.
- Also, please ensure they have a heavy and a lightweight jacket. You never know what the weather will be each day.
- We will be closed Monday, May 26th, in honor of Memorial Day.
Have a great May and a very Happy Mother’s Day.
Teresa, Jennifer and Nana Julie
