Dear Sprout Families,

The first month of the school year has started off great. All the Sprouts are really enjoying the room and getting the classroom routine down. The Sprouts that returned to class have been great helpers showing all the new Sprouts what they need to do. They are all having great fun together.

In September we Brushed our way through the month. We all had fun exploring all the different brushes we used. We talked about the textures of the brushes. Some were soft and some were a little rough and prickly to touch.

At circle time we read the books: Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton, Brush, Brush, Brush by Scholastic Books and Llama Llama Wakey-Wake by Anna Dewdney. We sang the song This is the way we brush. They all really got good at doing the hand motions by the end of the month.

Art time we used many types of brushes to paint with. We also scrubbed some toys and made bubble water to use our scrub brushes. Some of the brushes were small and some were big. We also painted with toothbrushes and hairbrushes. We only had to remind them a few times not to brush their hair and teeth with the paint.

In the classroom we put brooms and brushes in the dress-up area. They would take the little sweepers and sweep on the floor. They also liked to take the duster brush and dust the shelves and each other off. Outside we used paint brushes on the sidewalk to paint water pictures and took some into the sandbox to brush the sand off the toys.

They all had fun using and playing with the brushes. Here is a few highlights each Sprout enjoyed this month:

Penny really enjoyed circle time. When we read our toothbrush book she would move her arm back and forth like she was brushing her teeth.

Archer was a great artist this month. His favorite project was painting with the little brushes. As he was painting with the brush would say “Paint. Paint.”

Rowan had a great first month in the room. He had a great time during circle time. He would do all the hand motions as we sang at circle time. By the end of the month he was singing all the songs with us.

Riley liked taking the little broom and sweeping the toys on the rug. As she was sweeping them into a pile would say “All clean.” What a great helper.

Beckett enjoyed taking the little sweeper in the sensory bin, to sweep up the corn kernels and dump them in the bowl. When he had some in the bowl would say “Clean up. Sweep.”

Julia did a super job helping sweep up the toys over to the baskets. As she was sweeping always had a big smile on her face.

Oliver had fun doing all the different brush projects at art time. He would get very excited when it was art time and couldn’t wait to get to the table.

Jackson also enjoyed the little brooms in the room. He would take the broom and sweep all the trucks into a pile. When he had them all in a pile would say “I clean up.”

It was a great month exploring brushes. We can’t wait to see what new adventures we will have next month.

In October we will be dressing up with Clothes and Costumes. As your Sprout is getting older they are probably exploring more with their clothes. They may be interested in the variety of colors, textures, materials and patterns that clothes come in and enjoy exploring features such as zippers, buttons, and snaps. As we study clothes, the Sprouts will develop fine-motor skills as they open and close buttons, zippers and snaps. Social skills as they explore clothes alongside other children and learn about the special clothes other people wear and cognitive skills as they sort and explore clothes and incorporate them into dramatic play experiences.

At circle time we will be reading a book about a shirt that loses buttons and a few books about different costumes. We will be singing a few songs about how we put on our clothes and a pumpkin song. Art time we will paint, color, draw and glue material on different clothes. At the end of the month we will make a few Halloween projects.

In the classroom we will have clothes puzzles and all kinds of different clothes and costumes in the dress-up area that they can put on and take off. With the weather getting colder we will also be practicing putting on our coats by doing the coat trick. It’s going to be a great month exploring all the different clothes to wear.

Tammy is still searching for a teacher for our classroom. In the meantime Ms Emily will be filling in.

Here is a few reminders for the month:
Please check your Sprout’s extra clothes. Weather is changing so the shorts can go and long pants can come in.

  • Make sure they have a coat. The mornings are cold and we are working on our coat trick this month.
  • Thank you for everything you do. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to come talk to us.

Have a wonderful October and a Happy Halloween.

                  Teresa, Nana Julie, and Emily
