What a stellar month we’ve had! Our solar system study was filled with exciting activities, songs, sensory stations, art projects, and hands-on learning. It has been such a joy watching our Branchers grow each month. They continue to surprise us with their knowledge, independence, creativity, and developing skills! As we launched into outer space, we started by learning about our solar system, including the names and order of the planets. Our Branchers quickly memorized all the words to our planet song and filled our classroom with fascinating space facts! Along the way, they expanded their vocabulary by learning words like orbit, star, supernova, nebula, and satellite, as well as the names of dwarf planets. They are well on their way to becoming little space scientists! This month, our classroom was transformed into the International Space Station (I.S.S.), where Branchers became astronauts! They dressed up, practiced using their new vocabulary for space, and conducted “research” on the computer. They also explored exciting learning stations, including magnetic rocket building, astronaut figurines, and planet marbles. Their imaginations took them on incredible adventures as they designed rockets and traveled to faraway planets. Of course, no month in the Branch classroom would be complete without ART! We started by creating star-shaped self-portraits and personalized rocket name tags. It has been wonderful to see each Brancher grow not only in their fine motor skills but also in their confidence as they draw, color, and write their names. Their progress has been remarkable!
We couldn’t learn about planets without spending time exploring the amazing planet we call Earth! We discovered that Earth is special because it has gravity, oxygen, and most importantly, water, making it the perfect place for life. We also learned interesting facts about each of the other planets in our solar system.
To bring our learning to life, Branchers experimented with a fun marble painting technique. Using paint and marbles, they created each planet by choosing colors that matched its appearance. This project took several days to complete, but the finished solar systems were absolutely beautiful and gave everyone a chance to learn more about each planet along the way.
Our exploration continued as we learned about the life cycle of a star. We discovered that stars begin as nebulas before growing and eventually ending their lives in a spectacular explosion called a supernova. Together, we researched amazing photographs of real supernovas, and the Branchers were fascinated by the brilliant bursts of color. Inspired by what we learned, we created our own colorful supernovas using liquid watercolors and salt. The results were just as breathtaking!
We also explored constellations and shooting stars. Branchers layered construction paper to create beautiful nighttime landscapes, complete with mountains, water, and a star-filled sky. After painting their stars, they connected them to form their own unique constellations and even gave them creative names. We also learned that “shooting stars” aren’t actually stars at all! They’re small rocks, called meteoroids, burning up as they travel through Earth’s atmosphere. To finish our lesson, everyone made straw-powered shooting stars and turned our playground into a meteor shower!
Zoom, zoom, zoom! We’re headed to the Moon! Next, we explored different ways to travel through space by learning about rockets, satellites, and rovers. Using Google Earth, the Branchers were amazed to see how satellites can capture images of places all around the world. Together, we visited Big Ben in London, explored Antarctica, and even found Growing Tree! The children loved seeing how detailed satellite images can be. Afterwards, they made their own satellites using construction paper and aluminum foil to represent the solar panels.
Math was also part of our space adventures! This month, we explored the phases of the moon while practicing fractions. During morning circle, we learned that although the moon itself never changes shape, the part we see does throughout the month. We identified the four main phases: the crescent moon (or “banana moon,” as our Branchers lovingly call it!), the half moon, the gibbous moon, and the full moon.
We used our math skills to discover that two half moons make a full moon, and four crescent (quarter) moons also make a full moon. Then, we did one of our favorite projects—making puffy paint with shaving cream and glue! Each Brancher carefully cut out moon phases before painting and assembling them into their own moon phase display. It’s been amazing to watch everyone’s scissor skills improve throughout the year.
Our hands-on learning continued! We love incorporating food into each topic, so this month our Branchers sampled astronaut food (MREs). They learned that astronauts have to get creative with meals in space. Freeze-dried astronaut ice cream was a class favorite, and many were surprised by how much they enjoyed the macaroni and cheese too!
Time has flown by, and just like that, August is here—our final month with the Branchers. While it’s a bittersweet season, our hearts are full of gratitude. It has been an honor to spend this school year learning, growing, and making memories with each of your children. This year, we watched them become more independent as they learned to zip their coats, fold their blankets, and match their shoes. We also saw wonderful growth in their friendships, kindness, empathy, and mindfulness. They have blossomed in so many ways, and we know they are more than ready for their next adventure in the Blossom classroom. Finally, thank you for letting us be part of your children’s lives this year. Watching them learn, laugh, and grow has been a wonderful gift, and we will treasure these memories forever. We’re very grateful for your trust and support throughout the year. Before we say goodbye, we want to make every moment of August count! Our next learning adventure is Geology, and we have many exciting activities planned. We’re going to have a ROCK’n good time!
